Development of corneal surface after suture removal in patients with penetrating keratoplasty – first results

Objective
To compare videokeratometric data(wave-front-analysis(WFA),eccentricity(Ecc.) and central corneal power) in eyes after penetrating keratoplasty(PKP) to assess the impact of suture removal(SR) on corneal topography.
Methods
In 27 eyes sequential SR was performed within 4 weeks 1 year after PKP.Videokeratography was obtained to analyze central corneal power (27eyes),Ecc. and WFA(20eyes) before and after SR.
Results
Ecc., aberration coefficient and HOA-RMS were out of the normal range.In 12 of 19 eyes the Ecc. decreased after SR about 0.25,(highest change in nasal quadrant).The aberration coefficient(Bürki) was stable,the HOA-RMS had an increasing course.In 12 eyes the astigmatism was stable(+/-1dpt.), increased in 12 about 2.95D (min1.1D, max7.2D) and decreased in 3 about 3.56D(min 3.5D, max3.65D).
Conclusions
After SR the transplant get a flatter curvature(increasing of the negative Ecc.) in most of the eyes.In a half,there is no astigmatism change,but in a higher part of the other eyes it increased,but without any impact to the wave-front parameters.To inform about these possible changes is essential before SR.
