Objective
The basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is considered as the most common malign skin neoplasm. The topographical distribution is characterized by a frequency of 65% involving the lower eyelid, 15% as well the upper lid as the inner canthus and 5% the outer canthus. Concerning the growing behavior we can classify the basal cell carcinoma in different types: nodular, ulcerative, sclerosing or mixed forms. In this clinical study we correlate the histological findings with the number of follow-up resection and evaluate the recurrence rate for each type.
Methods
We analyze in a retrospective und cohort study of 45 patients, with histological assured BCC diagnosis, the long-run outcome. The period of the study was between 2005 und 2008. In the context of the follow-up examination we collected the needed information about the operative procedure and the current feature.
Results
Of the 45 operated patients 86,76% were nodular BCC and with it the most common detectable form in our study. Furthermore we found 4,33% of sclerosing type and 8,9% of mixed type; nodular with cyst component. In 50% our diagnosed nodular BCC cases a follow-up resection was performed, 7 patients of them needed twice or more resection. The mean value of needed second-look resection was 0,89. One of the sclerosing BCC didn’t need a follow-up resection however the second one requires three of it. ¾ the mixed form considered necessary follow-up resection. Recrudescence appears in only 3 cases of nodular BCC.
Conclusions
The histological diagnosis of BCC is for the degree of resection very important, because each type reveals different growth behavior. The nodular one was as expected the most common form. For a significant conclusion concerning the number of follow-up resection und the recurrence behavior of the different histological type it is necessary to expand this study in order to create a greater collective. |
