Strabismus at school-age children

Objective
the research was conducted in order to determine frequency of strabismus and related sight disorders in the group of children of the age 7-15.
Methods
results of ophthalmological tests conducted on primary and secondary schoolchildren (7-15 years old) were analyzed. The study covered 3025 children - 1359 (44.9%) boys and 1666 (55.1%) girls. The ophthalmological examination included: sight acuity assessment with the Snellen charts, a refraction defect examination – with an autorefractometer (after the accommodation paralysis), evaluation of the eyeball setup ( Hirschberg Test, Cover Test), as well as examination of binocular vision – the Fly Test and the Lang Tests.
Results
a non-parallel setup of eyeballs was found at 1.8%  of the students (convergent strabismus at 1.4%; divergent strabismus at 0.4%). Among the boys, 1.8% children squinted (convergent strabismus was found at 1.5% of boys, and the divergent strabismus - at 0.4%). Percentage of squinting girls was 1.8 ( convergent: 1.4, divergent: 0.4). Eyball setup disorders were observed generally at astigmatic children (over 3 times more frequently than in the normal-vision group) and at children with hypermetropia (over 2 times more frequently than in the normal-vision group). Nystagmus was diagnosed at 0.2% of boys and 0.1% of girls. The lack of binocular vision was observed at 7.8% of the examined children, whereas this applied to 8.1 boys and 6.9 girls. The highest percentage of the lack of stereopsis was among the hypermetroptic children.
Conclusions
Almost 2% of the schoolchildren under the study had strabismus. The convergent strabismus was much more frequent. No significant differences between the boys and girls were found as to the frequency. Among the refraction disorders: astigmatism and hypermetropia increase significantly the frequency of disorders in eyeball setup and the lack of the binocular vision.
