Abstract

Experience with a new occlusion tool

Synke Meltendorf, Wolfgang Behrens-Baumann
Augenklinik, Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg, Magdeburg

Objective
In the therapy of amblyopia Bangerter-occlusion-foils are often used. To achieve an effective therapy, it is nessessary to reduce the vision of the leading eye below the vision of the amblyopic eye by placing a foil in front of the leading eye. A reduction of the vision alone is not sufficient for therapy, the power of the foils have to be increased until the leading eye  has changed. The declareted power of the foil is only a suggestion for the correct power needed to reduce vision of the leading eye. Despide of the choosen occlusion foil by the suggestion, in practice often the vision of the leading eye is still better than the declarated power of the foil. Therefore a switch of the leading eye is often not achieved.
Methods
Because of this experience we do not prescribe the foil with the declarated vision. Since 1992 we use a self build foil-occlusion-form to find the correct power of the foil. The correct  power is achieved, when the leading eye changes.
Results
Using this methode a sufficient foil-occlusion is possible.
Conclusions
The new occlusion tool is commecially available since one year (Trusetal-company). The ledge can also be used for quantification of relative afferent pupillary deficiency (RAPD) and can help to distinguish a amblyopic visual loss from a organic visual loss. We have no financial interest.
