Objective
Glaucoma are a heterogeneous group of eye diseases with characteristic changes of the optic nerve head (ONH). The clinical investigation of morphological finding of ONH is of crucial importance for the diagnosis of glaucoma. The stereoscopic photographic documentation of glaucomatous excavation of the papilla is able to simplify the decision about a possible early change or progression of glaucoma. The aim of this study was to provide stereoscopic visualization of the glaucomatous optic atrophy by the use of an autostereoscopic display.
Methods
8 patients (5 women, 3 men: 38 to 64 years) from the “Erlangen Glaucoma Registry” with clinical suspicion of glaucomatous optic atrophy in primary open angle glaucoma were chosen for this study. Consecutive stereoscopic images (30°) of the ONH using a fundus camera were performed. The pictures were scanned (SprintScan 35 plus) and in .jpg files converted and saved. Then, the 3D images were visualized on an autostereoscopic display (Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut, Berlin) without glasses or other tools.
Results
The ONH of glaucoma patients can be well seen on the Free2C autostereoscopic display and the glaucomatous excavation is good visualized as well as other 3D-related anatomical characteristics for the evaluation of the optic glaucomatous atrophy (neuroretinal rim, notch, inner slope of excavation, depth of excavation, etc.). Slightly different recording conditions caused minor stereoscopic rivalry in corresponding details which, however, detracted the spatial perception of stereo image pairs only slightly.
Conclusions
Visualization of stereoscopic images of the ONH of glaucoma patients, using the Free2C autostereoscopic display is possible. This technique allows the evaluation of the glaucomatous optic atrophy and, furthermore, improves the quality of early diagnosis and progression of the chronic glaucoma disease.
