Objective
Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a transport protein in human plasma which regulates the bioavailability of sex hormones and mediates membrane receptor signalling. Besides, the SHBG may affect inflammatory processes.
The objective of this study was to evaluate, if there are any alterations of the levels of SHBG in the aqueous humor in patients with acute anterior uveitis (AAU).
Methods
A prospective, comparative control study. Aqueous humor was collected from 20 eyes of 20 patients with AAU. The level of SHBG was determined with a commercially available enzyme-linked immune-absorbent assay kit. The control group comprised 20 aqueous humor samples from 20 eyes about to undergo cataract surgery and without any other ocular or systemic disease; controls were match by age and gender with the uveitis patients.
Results
In patients with UUA, the concentration of SHBG in aqueous humor was markedly higher than in control subjects (Mann-Whitney U test, p< 0,001). We measured levels of 108640,10 pg/ml ± 126446,75 pg/ml (mean ± SD) in eyes with UUA versus 14674,21 pg/ml ± 11963,61 pg/ml in eyes without inflammatory disease.
Conclusions
In eyes with AAU the aqueous humor SHBG level was increased in our study. This result indicates an association of SHBG with the regulation of inflammation in patients with AAU. |
