Objective
The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in macular sensitivity in diabetic macular edema three month after treatment with Avastin or Triamcinolone.
Methods
Twentyeight eyes with clinically significant macular edema were included in this prospective study. They were randomized into two groups. Fourteen subjects received three intravitreal injections of 2,5mg bevacizumab and the other 14 received one initial intravitreal injection of 8mg Triamcinolone and two further sham treatments. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT) and macular sensitivity were evaluated at baseline and three month after the first intravitreal injection.
Results
After three months the Avastin group and the Triamcinolone group improved in Macular sensitivity (1,49 dB and 0,54 dB respectively) and fixation stability (11% and 1%) . These results correlate with gain in BCVA and loss of CRT.
Conclusions
Microperimetry might be an adequate method to evaluate functional changes not only of the fovea but also of the parafoveal area in the treatment of macular edema.
