Abstract

DO.08.06

Treatment of circumscribed choroidal hemangioma with photodynamic therapy – long-term follow-up using multifocal electroretinography

Andreas Lipski, Bernhard Jurklies

Zentrum für Augenheilkunde, Universitätsklinikum Essen, Essen

Objective
To objectively investigate retinal function using multifocal electroretinography in patients with choroidal hemangioma undergoing treatment with photodynamic therapy using verteporfin (PDT).
Methods
8 eyes of 8 patients with vision loss due to subfoveal exudation related to choroidal hemangioma underwent photodynamic therapy (light dose of 100 J/m² at  692 nm). Pre- and postinterventional conduction of 103 focal ERGs in the central 25° was performed using the VERIS  multifocal electroretinography system (mfERG, EDI, California). Follow-up examinations were performed after 60-82 months.
Results
Central amplitudes of N1 and P1 mfERG responses revealed early increases with shortened implicit times corresponding to fluid resorption and vision gain after PDT.
Conclusions
mfERG long-term follow-up reveals sustainment after early improvement of retinal function and further underlines PDT efficacy and safety in patients with symptomatic circumscribed choroidal hemangioma.
