AbstractDO.21.04 Stem cells: Evidence or speculation in CEC? Monika Valtink1, Katrin Engelmann2 It was observed that corneal endothelial cells from the periphery, but not from the central cornea, have a limited capacity to proliferate. This observation led to the hypothesis that the posterior limbus harbors a niche for corneal endothelial progenitor cells. In recent years evidence for the existence of such stem cells of the corneal endothelium are increasing. Cell and molecular biological studies substantiate the existence of a subpopulation of corneal endothelial cells, which is capable of proliferation, in the peripheral posterior limbus. Studies on in vitro cultivation and also first application of these cells in animal models were already performed. This presentation will give an update on corneal endothelial stem cell research.
