Abstract
DO.25.01
Corneal laser surgery for the treatment of presbyopia: techniques and perspectives
Mike P. Holzer
International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Augenklinik, Universität Heidelberg, Heidelberg
Objective
The increasing number of patients in the presbyopic age group as well as the necessarity for good near visual acuity lead to demand for surgical options to treat presbyopia.
Methods
The Excimer Laser based PresbyLASIK as well as the femtosecond laser based INTRACOR procedure are new treatment options for presbyopia. Aim of both corneal laser procedures is a change of the corneal curvature towards a multifocal central part.
Results
The different working principles as well as own 12 months experiences with the INTRACOR procedure performed in 25 patients aged 56,2 +/- 5,79 years will be demonstrated. The mean near visual acuity tested in 40cm distance increased from 0.70 +/- 0.16 logMAR to 0.26 +/- 0.21 logMAR.
Conclusions
The femtosecond laser based INTRACOR treatment is a fast, safe and promising method for the treatment of presbyopia. Due to the purely intrastromal laser cuts the risk of infections is much smaller than in many other refractive surgery procedures. Since INTRACOR is only available for presbyopia and lower amounts of myopia or hyperopia and PresbyLASIK can be performed in higher refractive errors, both procedures complement each other. |
