Fs-Lentotomy: Change in accommodation amplitude of in vitro crystalline lenses by Fs-Laser pulses

Objective
The aim to treat presbyopia is a current field of research. One concept based on the Helmholtz theory of accommodation is the femtosecond-lentotomy. Femtosecond laser pulse induced micro incisions inside the crystalline lens create gliding planes which increase the flexibility of the hardened tissue. Our aim was to evaluate the influence of the laser treatment on the accommodation process in vitro.
Methods
For the implementation of the gliding planes inside human donor lenses as well as in cat and porcine lenses we used a 100 kHz fs-laser system (wavelength 1040 nm, pulse duration 300 fs, pulse energy 1.3-1.6 µJ). Mechanical and geometrical changes of the lens tissue due to the fs-lentotomy treatment were analyzed.
Results
The experimental as well as theoretical investigations of the influence of the created gliding planes inside the lens tissue showed an increase in accommodation amplitude after the laser treatment.
Conclusions
Fs-Laser induced cuts inside the lens tissue lead to a gain in accommodation amplitude of in vitro human donor lenses and cat lenses. |
