Objective
Evaluation of the Lang number 1 and 2 Stereotest in 504 children from an isolated and rural region in Ghana, with whom direct verbal communication was partly not possible
Methods
The Lang Stereostest number one and two were presented to children from the age of 1 to 15 years. The results, Age, sex and cooperativeness were recorded on a standardised
form. Children with mature cataract or blindness were excluded from the evaluation.
Results
504 children were examined.102 in the age of 1 to 3 years, 105 in the age of 4-6 years, 104 in the age of 7-9 years, 127 in the age of 10-12 years und 66 in the age of 13-15 years.
A positive test was seen in 54,9% in the age of 1-3 years, 90,1% in the age of 4-6 years, 93,6% in the age of 7-9 years, 98,7% in the age of 10-12 years and 97% in the age of 13-15 years. In all, 10 children were seen with a negative test. The cover test revealed an orthophoric status in 9 and an estropic status in 1 of these children.Children with lack of cooperation were seen in 45,1% in the age of 1-3 years, 7,6% in the age of 4-6 years and in the age of 7-9 years. All children from the age of 10 years were cooperative. 58% of the children under an age of 6 years were capable of seeing and showing the car and the elephant, however the objects could not be named. 95% of the children from the age of 7 were able to name the car and the elephant.
Conclusions
The Lang Stereotest is suitable for evaluating children from the age 4 years in an isolated and rural region in Ghana. Due to the isolation from the mainland, 58% of the children under an age of 6 years were capable of seeing and showing the car and the elephant, however the objects could not be named. 95% of the children from the age of 7, who were school attenders, were able to name the car and the elephant. Both Lang Stereotests should be presented to children in isolated and rural regions in Ghana, in order to get a better evaluation of binocular disorders. |
