AbstractFR.11.01Supranuclear paresis – differential diagnosis and therapy Heimo Steffen Supranuclear palsies are characterized by deficiency of one or more different types of eye movements while other types of eye movements remain preserved. The knowledge about the different types of eye movements and their generation brain structures enable us to localize a pathologic process to certain brain area. Supranuclear gaze palsies can go along with a head tilt, as a head turn in acquired horizontal gaze palsy or can lead to to a manifest eye deviation. A good example is an exotropia in internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Both, head tilt and/or a deviation from a parallel eye position usually can be improved by eye muscle surgery. An enlargement of the field of binocular single vision is often an achievable goal in these cases. Unfortunately it is not unanimously known that symptoms in supranuclear palsies can often markedly be improved by eye muscle surgery.
