Abstract

FR.20.01

Neurodegenerations of the retina – from pathophysiology to therapy

Mathias W. Seeliger
Bereich Neurodegeneration des Auges, Forschungsinstitut für Augenheilkunde, Department für Augenheilkunde, Universität Tübingen, Tübingen

The synergy between clinically and experimentally oriented ophthalmologists, geneticists, and basic scientists has led to a growing body of knowledge about the pathophysiological details of retinal neurodegenerations.
As a result, a number of therapeutic approaches that act at different sites of the visual system have been developed.
Commonly, these are curative in nature and aim to stop the disease process or at least to reduce its magnitude, but there are also attempts to restore retinal function through artificial light-sensitive proteins.
This presentation briefly summarizes some of these approaches.
