Abstract

FR.22.06

Optical coherence tomography for anterior segment diagnostics

Anja Viestenz, Wolfgang Behrens-Baumann

Augenklinik mit Poliklinik, Otto-von-Guericke-Universität, Magdeburg

Optical coherence tomography is an established tool for diagnostics of the posterior segment. This technology becomes more and more important in morphologic analysis and biometry of the anterior segment of the eye.
Differences between the anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) and established methods of anterior segment diagnostics will be pointed out and the biometric differences will be demonstrated.
The morphologic analysis of anterior segment pathologies using AS-OCT allows a precise quantification and localisation – also in patients with corneal opacities. Tumours of the iris or the conjunctiva can be measured exactly and tumour progression can be documented. The measurement of the extension of a ciliary body cleft is essential for the preoperative management of direct cyclopexy. The AS-OCT is as good as the ultrasound biomicroscopy. The morphologic cause of postoperative filtering bleb failure can be identified using the AS-OCT (e.g. cyst, scar) and a minimal invasive treatment can be selected. The AS-OCT diagnostic is limited due to low scan depth in z-axis and absorption of infrared rays by melanin and blood.
