Abstract
FR.22.07
Formation of haze after corneal cross-linking in keratoconus

Klinik und Poliklinik für Augenheilkunde, Universitätsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus, Dresden
Aim
To evaluate eyes with stromal haze developed after riboflavin-UVA-induced cross-linking of corneal collagen.
Methods
One hundred and sixty-three eyes of 127 patients were included in this retrospective analysis. The follow-up was one year. At the first and all follow-up examinations best corrected visual acuity, corneal topography and corneal thickness were recorded.
Results
There were 149 eyes of 114 patients with clear cornea, without stromal haze after CXL (control group) and 14 eyes of 13 patients with developing of stromal haze after the procedure (haze group). Preoperatively, the mean K value of the apex in the control group was 62.13 ± 13.75 D and in the haze group was this value 71.09 ± 13.2 D (P=.02). The mean value of the corneal thickness before the procedure was in the control group 478.14 ± 52.39 µm and in the haze group was it 420.00 ± 33.93 µm (P<.001). Comparing the BCVA postoperatively in each group, in both groups was the difference compared to preoperative values statistically significant.
Conclusion
The parameters defining the stage of keratoconus, e.g. K-values or corneal thickness could be considered as predicting factors for possible development of corneal haze after riboflavin-UVA-induced cross-linking. |
