Klinik und Poliklinik für Augenheilkunde, Universitätsklinikum Leipzig, Leipzig

Objective
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults. It begins with deterioration of the small blood vessels in the eye, which leak fluid and lipids onto the retinal layers, causing blurred vision. According to the multinational study of vascular disease in diabetes which was reported by world health organisation the risk of devastating vision threatening complications is 2 % in 8 years.
Panretinal photocoagulation and anti-VEGF therapy can stabilize the process in the retina, but unfortunately, not always.
Methods
We present a video report about surgical treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
Conclusions
Our video presentation demonstrates different surgical choices during diabetic retinopathy, particularly in treating vitreoretinal traction, persistent hemorrhage and macular edema.
