Abstract

SA.12.04

Comparison of different high resolution OCT systems

Sebastian Wolf
Universitätsklinik für Augenheilkunde, Inselspital, Universität Bern

Objective
To compare central retinal thickness (CRT) measurements in healthy eyes by different OCT instruments and to compare the intersession reproducibility.
Methods
Six different OCT instruments (Stratus™ OCT, SOCT Copernicus, Spectral OCT/SLO, RTVue-100, Spectralis™ HRA+OCT, and Cirrus™ HD-OCT) were used to assess central retinal thickness of healthy subjects. With each system measurements were performed in two different sessions on the same day to assess mean values and intersession variation.
Results
Twenty healthy subjects were included in the study. Compared to the Stratus™ OCT all spectral OCT instruments showed significantly higher CRT values. The intersession variation was good (< 5%) for all instruments, but best for the Spectralis™ HRA+OCT (<0.5%).
Conclusions
The six OCT systems provided different values for central retinal thickness. These differences can be explained by differences in retinal segmentation algorithms used by the various OCT systems. The data implicate that the different OCT systems cannot be used interchangeably for the measurement of macular thickness.
