Objective
To compare retinal thickness measurements and segmentation performance of 3 different optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices for imaging eyes with macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
Methods
In this prospective, controlled study 20 eyes of 20 patients with acute BRVO were included. Eighteen unaffected healthy partner eyes served as control group. The retinal thickness measurements were analysed in 5 fields of ETDRS grid and the proportional segmentation errors were evaluated for time-domain (Stratus) and spectral-domain OCT devices (Cirrus, Spectralis).
Results
Central millimeter thickness (CMT) showed a mean difference of -64 µm, -74 µm and -18 µm (p<0.01) in normals and -31 µm (p=0.107), -92 µm (p<0.001) and -105 µm (p=0.016) in BRVO group, between Stratus and Cirrus, between Stratus and Spectralis and between Cirrus and Spectralis, respectively. Although, in normals no remarkable segmentation errors were observed, in BRVO group, 14.6% of the Spectralis, 20% of the Stratus and 36.6% of the Cirrus showed moderate or severe segmentation errors.
Conclusions
Spectral-domain OCT provides generally more precise detection and visualization of intraretinal structures, however, correct delineation of relevant retinal structures remains a critical issue using advanced OCT technology and should be addressed in future software upgrades. |
