Objective
Aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical results in patients with a Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) in a follow-up of six months.
Methods
In 22 eyes of 14 patients with cataract we performed cataract surgery followed by implantation of a Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). 2 weeks after surgery we adjusted the LAL’s. Preoperatively, before adjustment and lock in as well as 1, 3 and 6 months after lock in we performed a complete ophthalmological examination.
Results
All cataract surgeries ocurred uneventfully. Preoperatively the mean refraction was of +0,8D (SD ± 3,2). 2 weeks after surgery the mean refraction was +0,81D (SD ±0,78D), 1 month after lock in of the LAL of +0,13 D (SD ±0,39), after 3 months +0,12 D (SD ± 0,4) and after 6 months +0,07 (SD ±0,23). The preoperative UCVA average was 0,34 (SD ± 0,2). It rose before adjustment up to 0,65 (SD ± 0,25) and was 0,98 (SD ± 0,16) six months after treatment completion. The mean preoperative astigmatism was -1,16 D (SD ± 0,93). 2 weeks after surgery it was of -0,86 D (SD ± 0,68), six months after lock in there was only a residual cylinder of -0,18 D (SD ± 0,37).
Conclusions
With the Light Adjustable Lens there is a unique possibility of correcting the postoperative refraction of up to 2 diopters myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism with a simple painless procedure without further surgery. The clinical results are very promising. Especially the astigmatic correction works very well, still further investigation on a greater number of patients and a longer follow-up is necessary.
