Ophthalmological care of patients with muscle diseases Viktoria Bau Patients with mitochondrial CPEO and other muscle diseases (oculopharyngeal muscle dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, myasthenia) often need and wish a ptosis operation. The risk of diplopia due to secondary incomitant strabismus but primary the risk of exposition keratopathy should be taken into account. This high risk is caused by progressive limitation of eye movements, the lack of Bell´s phenomenon and insufficiency of eye closure due to involvement of orbicularis muscle. Complications are controllable by intensive therapy.
