Abstract

SO.08.07

The indication of canthopexy in blepharoplasty

Falk Sommer
Klinik und Poliklinik für Augenheilkunde, Universitätsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus, Dresden

Objective
In the light of demographic changes and young peoples’ increasing aesthetic awareness blepharoplasty becomes ever more important. Surgery can be combined with canthopexy. This improves the existing functional deficits and prevents the risk of a post-surgical ectropion position.
Methods
Using patient examples this article will present the most common surgical methods to correct lower lid blepharoplasty as well as indication and possibilities of performing the canthopexy.
Results
Generally lower lid blepharochalasia can be corrected with very good cosmetic and functional results. Complications such as the scleral show can be reduced by performing the canthopexy – if indicated and performed correctly. Lid abnormalities caused by systemic diseases are problematical.
Conclusions
The preferred surgical method and whether the canthopexy needs to be performed is determined by the causes of blepharochalasia (prolapsed orbital fat, excessive skin, hypertrophic or relaxed orbicularis muscle, degeneration of the lateral canthal ligament) and other plastic-aesthetic facial surgery planned for the same operation.
