Early diagnosis of keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneration in refractive surgery

Objective
Early diagnosis of subclinical Keratoconus (forme fruste Keratoconus) and pellucid marginal degeneration is the most important step to avoid iatrogenic keratectasia. Due to the continuous transition between normal and diseased corneas, there is still dissense about the criteria for diagnosis of very early keratoconus and PMD stages Wavefront analysis of corneal aberrations, dynamic elastometry, pachymetry and classifications based on multivariate statistical models are modern diagnostic tools for clinical use. The lecture summarises the most recent advances in this area and their value in clinical practice.
