1-year-results of a new toric diffractive multifocal lens for refractive surgery

Objective
Up to now only bioptics could be used in refractive surgery for correcting high muyopia, hyperopia or presbyopia in combination with astigmatisms. Since summer 2007 the first model of a toric dirffractive bifocal intraocular lens is available for correcting combined refractive errors. We present the first 1-year-results on 12 eyes of 8 patients after refractive lens exchange.
Methods
On 12 eyes of 8 patients (age: 25.57 years) refractive lens exchange with implantation of a toric diffractive multifocal lens (Acri.LISA toric, Fa. Zeiss/*Acritec) was operated. Preoperatively best corrected visual acuity varied between 0.5 and 1.0. Preoperative refraction ranged between +3.0 and -18.0 D (spherical equivalent=SE), preoperative astigmatisms ranged between -1.5 und -5.75 cyl D.
Results
Postoperatively uncorrected visual acuity varied between 0.5 and 1.25. Postoperative refraction ranged between 0 and +1.0 D (SE), postoperative astigmatisms ranged between 0 und -0.75 cyl D. Refraction and rotation were stable even after 12 months. Patients’ satisfaction was very high.
Conclusions
The new toric multifocal lens is a new option within refractive surgery. The first 1-year-results are very promising. Further results and a comparison to bioptics procedure have to be awaited.
