Objective
So far mycophenolic acid (mycophenolate mofetil/CellCept and mycophenolate sodium/Myfortic) has been used for the treatment of uveitis only in small case series. The purpose of the study group is to bring together the data regarding efficacy and tolerability of mycophenolic acid in uveitis treatment.
Methods
We performed a retrospective analysis of all uveitis patients who have been treated with mycophenolic acid at one of the German centers represented in the study group. For evaluation of efficacy the reduction of recurrences during treatment with mycophenolic acid was assessed.
Results
A total of 310 patients (188 female (60.6%), 122 male (39.4%)) have been treated. Diagnosis was anterior uveitis in 56 patients (18.1%), intermediate uveitis in 122 patients (39.4%), posterior uveitis in 111 patients (35.8%) and panuveitis in 21 patients (6.8%). 256 patients (82.6%) received mycophenolate mofetil, 54 patients (17.4%) mycophenolate sodium. Treatment with mycophenolic acid was effective in 250 patients (80.6%). In general the treatment was well tolerated. Gastrointestinal discomfort was the most common side effect.
Conclusions
In all centers represented in the study group, mycophenolic acid demonstrated to be an effective and well tolerable immunosuppressive drug for the treatment of various uveitis forms.
