The course "OCT – Present and Future" offers a compact state-of-the-art and comprehensive update regarding options and relevance of modern OCT-technology over a vast spectrum of retinal pathologies and expert insights. OCT is a milestone in ophthalmologic diagnostics with the opportunity of a non-invasive, high-resolution representation of all retinal compartments e.g. vitreoretinal interface, intraretinal layers and subretinal space. Already, conventional OCT provides important and clinically relevant information about the condition of the central retina for diagnosis and therapeutic indication. Applications of OCT are all the frequent and severe retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinal disease (DRP) and vascular pathologies. With the evolution of the high-resolution technology the value of OCT has increased significantly, since a precise imaging of all details
and, based on raster-scanning, a complete three-dimensional representation
at all locations became available. Accordingly, modern OCT offers a realistic and quantified analysis of diseases of the central retina. Hence, OCT has become one of the most important parameters in the anti-angiogenetic therapy with high relevance for indication, prognosis and long-term management. For the understanding of pathogenesis OCT provides essential novel insights e.g. in diabetic retinopathy.
